I got this through the Vine program, so cost was not an issue for me. However, I simply would not pay current price on Amazon.com for it, or anything near that amount for a shaver. Now for the REST of the story - the great part worthy of 5 stars without the price issue.
This is the very best shaver I've ever used (I'm over 60 years of age). I've been happy with some brands, very unhappy with others over the years. I decided to try a different one than what I am currently using. The Panasonic shaver comes with instructions that are a little hard to follow on some functions, but it still got me up and running after a full charge (not even close to "overnight" recommended by many - most? - manufacturers). This took under an hour (it arrived at still about 40-50% charged from the factory).
The manual says to try it for a month to let my face get used to it. I tried it the day after it was fully charged, and absolutely love it! There was no redness, no irritation, no hair-pulling - none of that. It's been a couple of weeks now, and I have not used my "old" razor since (it's only a few months old). The Panasonic has consistently provided me with the best shaves I've ever had. I don't know what else I could possibly ask for (except a much lower price if I was having to pay for it). Oh - and the sideburns clipper worked very well - better than my other good quality shaver. Plus, I went several days between shaves last week, and the Panasonic took it all off in no more time than my other shaver can do just a single day's beard growth.
Note: I have ONLY used it dry so far. I can't imagine just how close a shave could be if I used shaving cream in the shower with it!
ADDED almost a year later: I LOVE THIS SHAVER! I've since used it in the shower after I forgot to shave before my shower and was in a hurry (had my wife hand it in to me when I realized I hadn't shaved). WOW! I've never had a closer shave, and all I used was a little bit of my regular body-wash shower soap. It went much faster than a dry shave, so the water waste was not excessive with the extra time in the shower. I won't do it that way most of the time, but it sure was nice for quickness as well as the closest shave I've ever gotten with NO irritation afterward.
Also, I've forgotten to charge it (despite the excellent lighted reminder display in the shaver) a couple of times and had to go back to my old "excellent" shaver. OUCH! I now really see (or feel) the difference between the older, relatively high quality shaver I'd gotten not long before this one.
With the price drop on Amazon and other places, I would seriously consider purchasing this shaver for myself now (it was free as an Amazon Vine reviewer). Oh - and I still haven't had to replace the head and screen yet, despite a very heavy beard. The replacements are a bit more than lower-end shavers, but the value of the product is now quite evident after considerable use, especially after having to briefly go back to my old shaver due to my forgetting to recharge this one. And recharge time is quite fast, too. This is now rated 5 stars (was 4 stars).
ADDED 12 December 2010: No change in the actual shaver rating. However, be aware that the Panasonic web site as well as their customer (non)service people will tell you the WRONG combination foil head and blades replacement part number and you'll then have wasted your money. I've hit the one year point of use, and could probably get at least another 2+ months from the blades and foil head. But I decided to go ahead and get a replacement set because it was taking longer to shave and the results weren't quite as good (still better than most less-expensive shavers). The combo set (foil head and blades) listed on the Panasonic site for this specific shaver is WES-9025-PC in one place, and -9020- in another. If you look up the -9025- item, it says it can't be found but automatically routes you to the page for the WES-9020-PC page, where it specifically says that item works with the ES-LA63. The blades do fit, but the foil head is for a smaller shaver - there is no way to use it on this model shaver. I don't know whether the -9020- item fits 100% or not, because of the expense in ordering what I had just received. I also talked to five different people at Panasonic (the first 4 said they could not help me and kept passing me along to someone else). The last person assured me that the -9025 product was correct. I ended up having to take a chance and separately order the individual foil head and hope it was the right one. It was: WES-9165-PC. Now the shaver is working like brand new again, after just being "pretty good" following a year of almost daily use. I still don't know if the Panasonic web site lists the correct item number for the blades, but at least I have about a year before I have to worry about this again. And don't pay Panasonic prices from their web site - $80 for the combo blades and they're not even the right ones. Heck - you can get the entire shaver for Amazon has those two items (above) for just over half the price Panasonic wants (plus no shipping).
I still absolutely love this shaver, but I am so turned off by the terrible customer service from Panasonic as well as them not caring to correct their web site to make it accurate, I'm not sure I'll buy another Panasonic product just because I can't count on the company if anything goes wrong. But that's just one opinion based on one person's experience.
