I suck at getting up. Usually I require 3 alarm clocks, with at least one in a different room, and even then I still manage to be late. It has been like this my entire life, I am an inveterate night owl even since I was a kid (I always used to miss the school bus then). I have had jobs before where I have to be there at 7 or 8am and I would have to sneak in as unobtrusively as possible, because no matter how important something is to me, I just cannot get up early. I am even late for job interviews. I got a new job where I had to be at work at 8am & some days I have to leave by 7am at the latest to get there--I almost did not take the job because I really did not think I would be able to consistently get to work by 8-ish. I usually tell people to lie and tell me something is happening at least 30 min before it really does, because otherwise I will be late. I cannot tell you how many flights I have missed over the years and I have never booked a flight before 1030 am.

I have been using this clock since Oct. 2010 (6 months), I can get out of bed and I am actually becoming a morning person (at 38 years old!). I have used other "sunrise" alarm clocks but eventually I learned how to snooze through them; for most of my life it has taken me at least 45 min to "wake up" and get out of bed.

This clock begins the sunrise about 30 min prior to alarm time with dim light that gradually increases in brightness. You can set how bright you want the light to become (I have it set on max). The alarm sound is soothing, not jarring, yet somehow I hear it and it wakes me up gently (usually I need at least 3 loud awful ones with at least one in a different room). The alarm sound "nudges" me out of bed. When I hit the snooze, the alarm sound goes off--but not the light!! Brilliant!! So I do not fall into deep sleep during snooze time.

I have been getting to work on time (for me) and even did relatively well with the time change this year. I still have 3 alarms, but with this one, I am routinely out of bed before alarm #2 goes off (20-30 min later) and I never hear alarm #3 anymore because I am up already and either walking the dog or in the shower.

I cannot really use this Wake Up Light as a bedside lamp though--once I did at bedtime, so the light was relatively dim, and it reset the alarm light to be at the same intensity/brightness in the morning as it was when I went to bed, so it did not really wake me up that well that day. So I have this plus a lamp at my bedside table. This clock does not take up much space and it is modern and unobtrusive on the table (goes with West Elm & Home Goods mix of furniture). So if you like to read before going to bed, you may need room for 2 lamps on your bedside table. I am too lazy to read the directions again to see if there is a way to use the light without disturbing the alarm settings, so maybe it is possible to do.

I read the directions when first setting up the lamp. For the time change, I did not have to read the directions but I was able to figure it out just by randomly pushing buttons (too lazy to look for the directions which I think are in the drawer nor do I have a knack for technology). There is a thunderstorm right now and the power just went out but there must be some type of internal battery because I did not have to reset this clock, although I have to reset the microwave. I have not used other alarm setting other than "alarm" which is this chime like sound that I never thought would be loud enough to get me out of bed. There is a bird setting and I think a third: I am a bird-watcher, so I do not really care for the bird sounds kind of generic sounding to me. The light showing the time display is a quiet, soothing orange that is barely noticeable and does not interfere with falling asleep; it does not light up the room even as much as the personal humidifier.

Choice of Two Natural Sounds or Radio

At your set wake-up time, you'll start to hear a natural sound or your selected FM radio station. These sounds start out quietly and take 90 seconds to reach your selected full volume level. Choose Your Light Level for Natural Awakening

Because different people have different light sensitivities, the Wake-Up Light lets you select the light intensity that best suits your personal preferences.
