When I received the SensoTouch 3D I figured that I would give it a try, but that the real litmus test would be with my husband as he is the "worst case scenario" on which to test any hair removal product.
My husband is Mediterranean/Italian and has copious amounts of coarse dark hair. He has to shave nearly everyday, as his five o'clock shadow seems to show up at around lunch. He is also bald- partially by genetics, and partially by choice.
He typically shaves his face and head in the shower, with a Gillette Fusion razor, with good results. Of course, this takes quite some time and in comparison, I'm in and out of the shower and bathroom and ready to go in 1/2 an hour, compared to his hour plus, when he shaves. So we were hoping for something that would be effective but also faster than a traditional safety razor.
The SensoTouch shaves fairly close, but not as close as a safety razor, not that this was an unexpected result. The Bald Guy said that if he shaves his head super close with a razor, the immediate SensoTouch result is similar to the next day after shaving with a regular blade. Which, isn't bad, considering his wiry, coarse hair.
But it isn't faster. If it had been faster to use the SensoTouch, he would have loved it and would have accepted not-quite-razor-close results in the name of efficiency. As is, it took him around the same amount of time to shave his head and face with the SensoTouch as it did with a safety razor. The one plus about this electric razor is that it is very gentle and low vibration on the face, producing minimal irritation- so in an "oops I overslept" situation, he can use this to tidy his face a little bit, but still not with the crisp, cleanness provided by a more traditional safety razor. Battery life was fine- long enough for him to do his face and head, but just- he nearly ran out of battery near the end, as it took so much more effort and time than manually...
But here's the fantastic surprise! I tried the SensoTouch on my legs- no dice. I thought the floating triple head would work magic on my legs, and as I have some hand tremors and spasm due to RA I figured I might have smooth legs with less gore.
However the SensoTouch seemed to snip only every 4th hair or so and I realized that any benefit gained by the ergonomic design (fits really well, even in my hands which have gripping trouble) and light weight, would be lost by me having to be bent over and craning around trying to eradicate that many hairs for the amount of time required.
Due to RA, I have to take prednisone. Steroids. Fun fun fun. But they do help and also they are the catalyst for me feeling like a bearded lady at times. Thankfully, I have light hair on my face, so it doesn't show much but man, when the light hits just right BAM! I look like I'm trying to grow facial hair. I am not trying to grow facial hair. I don't want facial hair.
So I tried the SensoTouch on my face (jaw, around the mouth, hollows of my cheek, between brows, and forehead...I know I sound like a beasty!) and I was impressed- on my light hair (medium fine) and the contours of my face it worked like a dream. The SensoTouch really hugged my facial curves and the three heads took care of my fuzz in a couple of passes. I looked with my magnifying mirror and my skin was smooth and hairless. Another really big surprise- there was no irritation, no redness... Also, my lips and face didn't have the weird feeling (like a foot that is asleep and waking up)- the tingling- that I have gotten from using a more traditional electric trimmer (with a facial hair attachment). My hands weren't feeling the vibes afterward either, as the vibrations are so fine, that you can feel them, but it's not the motor-boat stutter that makes your skin red, numb, and possibly tingly.
I'm thrilled because now I can touch up my face before I put my makeup on, if I haven't done it in awhile. For me the results last for a couple of weeks, which was also unexpected.
So, all in all, I think the SensoTouch 3D is the bee's knees as far as hair removal for those who are not so endowed in thick, coarse, dark man hairs. For my husband, I'd probably choose a less expensive model, as this doesn't offer any extra benefit for him. For me, I'm sticking with this so I can look fantastic and feminine, and without the rashy pink beard I used to get from waxing.
