I finally replaced my old, widely travelled, Norelco Advantage Shaver with the 8140XL. The table on this page is very helpful, as was Brendan's detailed review. After the usual struggle with the shrink-wrap, I charged it and put it to work. What a difference! I was amazed at the closeness, speed, and quietness of this newer generation of shaver. I consider it a huge step forward from the older versions. Somewhere in the battle with the shrink-wrap, I must have lost the little cleaning brush, they talk about in the manual. I expected to have it and maybe a little vial of mineral oil packed in the soft case, but no luck. However, it rinses easily, and using any mineral oil will be just fine. Also, for traveling, not having to physically switch it to 220VAC is a nice touch.
What I do not like: The goofy stand. It looks like some store display stand, and lacks the stability and heft of the older Norelco shaver's charging stand. I also don't like the pins in the charging well of the stand. Flush contacts would have been a better and stronger choice.
All in all I am very pleased with this purchase and with Philips' 15% off promotion, consider this an excellent deal.

I first bought a Braun SynchroPro 7505, then the 8140XL. The Norelco 8140XL shaves closer. The Braun 7505 is well made, feels good in the hand, is made in Germany, is noisier, shaves evenly, but never close enough.
The Norelco 8140XL feels light, slightly flimsy feeling, but is much quieter than the Braun. It is made in Holland. The ON/OFF switch is right where I want to put my thumb while gripping--poorly located switch. Initial charge 4 hrs, 1 hr charge time after that. Battery life is good. Can be used with cord. SHAVE: smoooooth, better than an older Norelco 885 model that I used for years. Requires only light to moderate pressure on face and actually shaves me faster than the older Norelco or the Braun. Replacement heads HQ9 are easy to find (at Amazon and other on-line and retail stores). Overall, recommended, this is the one I use now.

I bought this razor to replace an older Norelco I had. After reading the reviews on here this one sounded like what I wanted and was at a price I was willing to pay. I was a bit surprised by it as it is much quieter than my old one, which is nice early in the morning when I'm trying to be as quiet as I can so I don't disturb my wife. The razor is a bit deceiving in that it doesn't seem like it's putting out much power, but it cuts right through my whiskers with ease. I find it a bit tougher though cutting under my nose than I did with my old one, but I think as I become more comfortable with this one that will change. It, like my old one, is extremely easy to clean which is another big plus for me early in the morning. Overall, the razor isn't as heavy as my old one, so it's easier to handle. The three independent heads make it nice shaving on the chin as I'm getting closer shaves now than I did with the old one that didn't have the independent heads. I would definitely recommend this razor for those looking for a good shave at a price that won't take your breath away.Customer Review: The Best Shaver I have ever owned

I am 65 years old and have owned several electric shavers throughout my life but this is by far the best ever. I've had Schick's and Braun's and they have always given me a burn and I was not satisfied with the closeness of the shave. I have owned several older Norelco's, and with the floating heads they were comfortable, but still electric shaving wasn't close enough especially for formal outing, but I would use it for work. Over the years my batteries became weak so I decided to upgrade to the 8140xl. What a difference! Light as a feather, great improvement in the floating heads, comfortable enough to make shaving a delight, and a much closer shave. The water cleaning (though I still Prefer the old fashion way & clean with a brush), charging stand, looks and feel etc. are all additional perks, but the real quality in this machine is the close shave and comfort of use. Hats off to you Philips, I have no idea of how you can improve upon this shaver. Also, have been using it now for almost two weeks on a single charge and still going. I have owned this razor for about 2 years. This thing holds a charge like no other product I have ever owned. I think I must charge this razor maybe once a month or every 3 weeks - and I use it daily.
However - the other day the razor stopped taking a charge. The lights would not light up, and when they did - the "full" indicator would not light up. I figured that the "full" light may be broken... but after a couple of days the razor died and the charge light stopped lighting up.
So I called Customer Service - A recording comes on and says do you want to make a purchase or say "other." I say "other" and in 20 seconds an ONSHORE CSR answers - asks me 5 or so questions - when you bought it, how you use it, when you charge it, etc.
Then she says a new razor will be sent out to me - and Fexex labels will be included to send my old one back. WOW!! It was that easy - No Hassle, no RA#, No send it to a repair facility with a check, no refurb!
Great Razor and A+ customer service - you get what you pay for.
