Customer Reviews of Philips Norelco 8140XL SpeedXL Men's ShaverCustomer Review: FANTASTIC electric razor! Summary: 5 Stars
What a surprise! My face is certainly better off with any blade, but I had grown VERY tired of spending the money on 17 blades of stainless steel. So for the last 4 years I've had a "linear" Panasonic electric which did ok, after I had lightly gone over my face with a cheap 2-blade disposable.
My razor(s) had been left on our last vacation and I picked up this one at WalMart expecting to return it. WOW!
It seems kinda cheaply made at first - very light, not much vroom in the motor, etc. But when the first charge lasted 5 weeks I understood why! It really doesn't take much power to spin the blades fast (good gearing) or cut one day of whiskers. It really is a joy to own. For a week long vacation you don't even need to take the stand.
My favorite part is the ergonomic design of the whole body - an S shape that fits comfortably in your hand up or down or sides.
And yes the shave for my medium beard is VERY close! No more disposables!!
I certainly I hope I can replace the battery!
Customer Review: Best Electric Shaver I've used yet Summary: 5 Stars
I've used several electrics over the last 5 or 6 years or so including a Norelco from a couple years ago and most recently a Panasonic Vortex 8178. The Vortex is loud, powerful, and by and large does a great job. I ended up dropping and breaking the Vortex which is why I bought this Norelco.
This Norelco does just as good a job as the Vortex, and does so in a much gentler, softer way. It cuts just as close without the loud noise and without the irritation the Vortex can give you at first. This doesn't have the fancy cleaning machine like the Vortex does, but that was more trouble than it was worth--you have to buy replacement cartridges and it takes hours on end to clean it. You just rinse this Norelco under the faucet and it's as good as new. The only weak spot on this Norelco is its trimmer--it just isn't very powerful, not nearly as powerful as the Vortex and even not as good as my old Norelco. But the weak trimmer isn't enough to bring my rating down because the shaver works so well overall. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Wow Summary: 5 Stars
I have purchased a 8151XL which looks identical to the above 8140XL and I am not sure what the difference is. After using my Norelco Quadra for about 8 years and having absolutely no issues to with it I thought to myself, why don't I try a new razor. Since Quadra never gave me the close shave, I thought I experiment and see how technology has evolved over the years. I purchased the best: The Arcitec. What a disaster it was. It gave me terrible irritation, cut the hair very slowly and refused to pick up some. My face would not adjust to it. I struggled with it for a month and returned it to Norelco who hopefully will refund my money. Since I no longer had my old Quadra Action, I decided to give Norelco another try and purchased the 8151XL. I only shaved with it once, however, it was the best shave in my life. It picked up all uneasy hairs without struggle and I never expected the closeness it gave me. I love it and actually look forward to my next shave. I strongly recommend purchasing any shaver from this line up.
Customer Review: 8140 xl works great for me Summary: 5 Stars
I've always been a blade shaver, but it seemed I was changing them weekly, they cost ever-more, and I was never happy with my shave. I really liked the fact that it's suggested I start with a dry face, no shave crap to buy or anything like that. I like how this electric razor holds a charge for four hours and can just rest in the medicine cabinet in the interim. (It should only be charged when it's fully dishcharged, according to the packaging info) I like rinsing the heads in running water when I'm done shaving and leaving it open to dry, and if I use the sideburn trimmer, brushing it clean (as directed) is no big deal. I've not used it long enough to do monthly maintenance (remove the three floating heads, keeping them matched togethor, and rinsing them with water) but it all sounds pretty easy. I'm content with how this shaves my face, as well. No complaints, no suggestions for improvment, no regrets... It comes with a travel case.
Customer Review: Better than Remington and previous Norelcos Summary: 5 Stars
I've had mine more than 6 months now, and I don't seem to have any of the problems other reviewers have written about. A full charge lasts about one month. Yes, the RPMs are slower, and it is quiet running, but I have never been able to stall it by pressing too hard on the foils. Sometimes, I will shave stubble that is several days old, and it has no problem with that. The only DOWN SIDE is when I am shaving my upper lip -- if I get too close to my nose, the edge of the cutters will grab a nose hair and yank it out, rather than cutting it. Ouch! I quit using Norelco after using them for 30 years, but I am glad that I returned to buy this one. My greatest complaint about the older Norelco's was that the blades would become DULL in less than a year, and new blades cost almost as much as a NEW razor. Norelco has a HIT with this razor by adding 50-percent more cutting area in the triple-heads.
