This is much more than just a clipper - it's a hair cut kit. It includes some decent scissors, a "cape" to catch the cut hair, a comb, cleaning brush, carry pouch, and instructions DVD.
Cutting hair is quite simple and pays off very quickly, but you should first consider if you are a DIY type and willing to risk perhaps less than the perfect hair cut for your kids, your spouse, etc. The first few hair cuts will take 20-30 minutes as you figure out how much to take off and where. Alternatively, you can also start out with a trim here and there so you can stretch out your visits to the barber or salon.
Here are the reasons why I think it is significantly better than other products:
1) Cordless makes a HUGE difference. Finding a place to cut hair is tricky enough without having to make sure you have an outlet nearby. Also, cords can be clumsy when you're trying to get the right angle on the clipper.
2) This Clipper is very light and 3/4 the size of regular clippers. This makes it better suited for smaller hands but also more maneuverable - easier to get the right angle on the clippers to the comb. Downside is that the cutting path is about 1/4" narrower than "regular" clippers but this doesn't seem to be an issue.
3) Flexible / Adjustable guide comb. Most other clippers have a series of rigid guide combs that snap on. This has one comb that adjusts from 1/8" to 7/8" and another that goes from 1" to 1-3/4". This means you don't have to switch from one comb to another - just click over to the next setting. Just as importantly the guide comb also has a nice flex to it which makes it glide much more smoothly over their head and rounded corners so you don't gouge their skin.
4) Lithium Ion battery - makes it quite powerful and lightweight at the same time. It also means that after charging it holds that charge for a while so you're always ready.
I had a hard time deciding between 4 and 5 stars. I guess I was disappointed by the DVD. The video and the packaging came across as strictly for a mother to cut their son's hair. The DVD only included info on how to do 3 types of hair cuts on boys. However, I'm a guy and have cut my daughter's hair, my wife's hair and my own. I'd have liked more information on how to do other hair cutting techniques including how to do some simple girls haircuts.
