I currently own a Remington Titanium clipper set to trim my sideburns and hair between haircuts. The Remington works well if you keep it and all of the detachable combs in one place, but the size and weight of the cutter as well as the number of blades you need to carry to cut different lengths of hair is inconvenient to take with you if you are traveling. The Philips Norelco Qc5130/40 Hair Clipper seemed an ideal solution to this problem.
The comb on the front of the cutter is adjustable which eliminates the need to have detachable combs of different sizes. The cutter itself is lightweight due to the plastic body. The shape of the cutter is a little awkward to hold and better grips on the plastic body would have been helpful. The on / off switch slides easily for ease of use.
The combs are adjustable by pulling them away from the body. There are markings in millimeters to indicate the height of the cut. The combs can be pulled off entirely to use the trimmers to straighten sideburns, for example which is a nice feature. The combs are made of plastic but attached at the back of the cutter. This gives them a lot of play relative to each other which is different to the rigid combs of the Remington. The flexibility of the combs does not affect the quality of the cutting, but it does give rise to questions about how durable the combs are.
I have been pleased with the job the Philips Norelco clipper does with trimming my hair once I got used to setting the height of the combs correctly. I would certainly recommend the Philips Norelco clipper if you want to bring a hair clipper with you when you travel. I do, however question the durability of the combs over time which is why I gave the clippers only 4 stars.
