I love the Sonicare. For personal oral hygiene and tooth care there is no equal.
My father is a retired Dentist and gave me one of the first models when they came out in the mid to late nineties. It finally gave out on me this year, so it lasted for 13+ years (and probably would have gone much longer if I hadn't left it on the charger unplugged so many times). I am a Dental Lab Technician and have a pretty thorough understanding of the "oral environment". Regular brushing with a standard tooth brush is good, but the raking or dragging motion can damage gum tissue and periodontal ligaments that actually hold the tooth in your bone, creating pockets where bacteria can accumulate leading to potential decay at the root. Especially if you are using a hard or stiff bristle brush. When you use a Sonicare, it may feel weird at first (it really kinda' tickles), but you aren't dragging the brush across your teeth. Instead you are treating your teeth, and more importantly your gum's, to a gentle "massage" that stimulates tissues, encouraging them to be healthy and strong. Also, when using a standard brush there is a lot of food particles and plaque that you will simply not be able to get at. The bristles just graze over them. After using a Sonicare, I feel like I've just gotten a professional cleaning without all the pain. It gets into the hard to clean crevices and pockets and vibrates all the unwanted stuff out. I am also a smoker and I have found that with regular use it reduces tarter buildup that in the past had to be removed by a Hygienist with a scaler. Mind you - in NO way does ANY kind of brush replace a professional cleaning.
I've tried a couple of other powered brushes on the market, and they're ok. They're more affordable, but basically do the same thing as a standard tooth brush. I admit they are a little bit better, but they still rely on a lot of movement. Nothing gets the job done like a Sonicare.
Regarding the model I recently purchased: The design has improved since I received my first Sonicare in the late nineties. My old one had a tendency to "rattle" at times, which was often alarming and uncomfortable. The more compact head on the new model eliminates this problem. I saw that there were other models available that had more buttons, more lights and an optional UV cleaning unit. None of that stuff is necessary. I say keep it simple. You're more likely to use it, and used properly* a Sonicare will definitely improve your dental health and reduce costly dental bills.
I make teeth for a living, so really - every time someone buys a Sonicare, I'm looking at a career change. And so is your Dentist. No joke.
*Using a Sonicare "properly" does not mean you use it exactly as directed in the instructions. I spend more time on each quadrant of my teeth than the timer allows for. The important thing to me is to not abuse your teeth. Do what feels good.
