I have very flat feet - have had ever since I was a teen - and over the years, have collected a variety of orthotics - mostly off the shelf, some custom. Names like Scholl (custom & off the shelf), SuperFeet, WalkFit, Sole Supports (custom), etc.
Metal, fabric/foam/plastic, leather/cork, you name it -- hard, soft, in between. To make my flat feet even more problematic, and possibly as a result, I had achilles tendonitis a few years ago, with the result that my left foot gets tender and tires easily, and sometimes swells, when stressed due to walking with the "wrong" support.
My chiropractor has been recommending new more computer-designed custom ones (Foot Levelers at about $250) - so for less than $30, I decided to try these before investing another bundle.
SuperFeet were too low, and the custom Sole Supports and WalkFit a little too high for my left foot. Result: pain in walking after a mile or so, as my left forefoot would become stressed and my whole foot might even swell up.
It seems to be hard for manufacturers to get the arch support just right, but for me, these guys seem to have it. Not too low, not too high, just right.
I've had the Powerstep Pinnacles for a few weeks now, and they are remarkably comfortable to walk on (nice soft cushioning). In particular they seem to have the arch support at just the right level, such that it neither overstresses the foot from below nor lets it sag. In dress shoes, I can see using the 3/4 length version or the less-cushioned version (non-Pinnacle "Powerstep").
If you have foot pain due to arch issues, I would definately give these a $30 whirl. Also recommend you look at [...] which is very informative.
