The shoulder is just a difficult place ice down properly. A makeshift setup of a plastic bag filled with ice works pretty well for most other areas of the body, but keeping ice on the shoulder is unwieldy.
This shoulder wrap is a really nice product. The ice bag is high-quality, and the wrap holds it right on the shoulder where you want it. It secures the bag in place so you can walk about or work at the computer while using it. The wrap has two Velcro-secured straps, one that goes around the chest and the other around the arm. I only use the former, as it is more comfortable that way and still remains quite secure. Ice really is the best way to go and remains much colder than gel packs.
At first, it can be a little tricky to put this on by yourself. During my first attempts the ice bag would slip out of the wrap as I tried to attach the strap around the body, but it's really not that difficult once you get the swing of it and I have no problems getting it on alone.
It's a touch pricey, but this wrap really does a great job of keeping ice on the shoulder while still allowing some basic mobility and is certainly worth it compared to trying to hold a plastic bag filled with ice in the right position.
When not in use, keep the ice bag closed and leave a little water inside to keep the inner lining from drying out.
