I will start by saying that I've wasted at least 20 years of my life using the canned stuff (gels and creams), along with the 2, 3, 4 and 5 blade abominations. Needless to say, I was no stranger to ingrown hairs, irritation and feeling unsatisfied with how my skin felt after shaving. I have a very thick beard and shaving against the grain left me with a very irritated face.
So I said, there's got to be a better way, and I started reading blogs and other sources of information for tips on shaving and in the end getting the best shave possible. It all comes down to three key points:
1) Use the right cream or soap.
2) Use a DE Safety Razor.
3) Avoid shaving against the grain.
Today, I'm here to say that point #1 is taken care of. This is by far the best shaving product I've tried, it leaves your face feeling great, with almost no irritation/redness. This is the good stuff, simple as that. Please do yourself a favor and don't spend another minute or dollar shaving with the canned stuff.
I'm very excited to try this with my new Merkur Futur DE Safery Razor which should come in the mail within the next few days. If this is how good my face feels using a Gillette Mach5, I can't wait to see how it feels like with a real razor.

I've been using the typical shaving gel "goop", that comes from a can for about 10 years now, alongside my cartridge based razors. Having tried many brands, including Gillette, Edge and Nivea (my favourite), among others, I was sure I was protecting my face. After reading some articles about the benefits of shaving with a Double Edged razor, I decided to make the switch, and one of the things mentioned in the articles is the benefits of using a shaving soap, over the goop in a can. I made the switch to Proraso shaving soap, and I love it. It smells great, as did my shaving gels, but with natural ingredients, rather than synthetic chemicals. Also, you only need a dab in order to get a great, foamy, lather, which means that this stuff will last a long time. Finally, and to me, probably most importantly, my face feels nice and clean after my shaves, as opposed to slippery, as if there was some residue left over.
In summation, this provides a great, well protected shave, for a great price, and leaves you feeling clean and smelling great!

I've been using shaving soaps for a few years now. I find them to be significantly more cost effective than foams or gels. They also give a better quality shave over those others. As far as soaps I've used many different brands, but this one gives a better quality shave overall. I want to be clear that the menthol and eucalyptus scents are very subtle - about what you'd get if you smelled a eucalyptus leaf. They're not overpowering, even in steam, and it lathers quite thick and smooth. This comes as a whipped soap, not a puck, so it's also easier to build up a lather out of it.
The shave itself will be as close as you want to make it, as long as you use the right razor. For the absolute best I recommend a safety razor like Merkur, but that's up to you. You'll also want to use a badger brush for the correct lathering and application, but again, that's up to you.
Highly recommended for the best possible shave.

It develops a rich creamy lather, and the mentholation of the soap leaves you feeling awake and refreshed, with a slightly wonderful tingle in your skin (not the horrid burn of alcohol, but the refreshing song of cold mountain water splashed on your face to start your day).
I tried another brand of shave soap before buying the Proraso, and my sensitive skin / tough beard combo weren't coming out as I'd hoped, but once I switched. Wow.
It makes me want to use the after-shave lotion, too, but that stuff's still a little pricey. Maybe if I can find a good deal on it I'll order some, or add it to the wish list.
If you take your shaving seriously, you have to use this stuff. Your face will thank you.

I have tried many kinds of shaving soap, from the cheapest to the most pricey. Believe me, if you shave using a classic razor and brush - nothing comes close to Prosaso Shaving soap. Just a few swirls with your brush puts enough soap on your brush to create some impressive lather - and the great scent and incredible tingle of the Eucalyptus oil is pure pleasure. I use a Merker classic razor, a Vulvix pure badger brush; and this soap is the perfect compliment. And, for a final kicker - it isn't very expensive!!
Remember - no need to swirl and swirl - just a few strokes puts enough on the brush - work the lather up on your face! Using this method - a tub will last a long, long time. -- Mykal
