Customer Review: A Little Strange to Look At - But Quite Effective

When this arrived in a plastic bag, my family thought it was cow dung! They had their laughs, but I'm proud of this natural unperfumed soap.
I'm the perpetual seeker of the secret beauty cure, searching high and low for that thing that only certain people know about-- Something that actually works and has value. I ordered this and the Shea Butter five-pound box from Amazon a few weeks ago. Post holiday blues were setting in and I wanted a fresh change in my beauty routine to start the New Year. So after a little research, I ordered these two items on a whim. My hopes were not wasted on these beauty helpers. The Shea Butter (review on that separately) and this soap is quite good.
Considering the cost of a small, palm-size bar of beauty soap from a department store cosmetic's counter ($12 - $20) this is an incredible value for the amount. It does lather well, so consider using a quality brush (like a shaving brush)and it will last longer. I also use a round facial brush (under $5) to lather up the golfball-size piece I keep in a jar. This soap works well with one of those facial bushes you can get at most oriental markets or a large big box cosmetics store. If you keep the soap in a container and apply with a brush, you won't get soap "crumbs" falling all over the bathroom sink.
The soap doesn't remove waterproof mascara that well. On the plus-side, it does not clog the pores and doesn't overdry the skin (I had combination skin--acne and wrinkles!).
I experimented using this has a hard shampoo and it made my fine hair sticky and stringy, so I would not recommend it for long, fine hair. Constituting this with water may have helped it as a traditional shampoo, but I wouldn't recommend leaving watery soap for days without having any preservatives in it.
This is a little incovenient at first to break pieces off and consolidate into a manageable "bar" but well worth the effort if you want clearer, smoother skin.
Compared to basic castile soap or glycerine bars you purchase at a grocery store, this is superior.
I consider my search for the best facial soap ending here with great results at a frugal price and I'm keeping my fingers crossed this doesn't catch on and drive the price up or diminish the supply!
Or worse (and this is not my imagination) a company will purchase all available and relabel it at an enormous markup and sell it on late-night television infomercials!

Usage of the Black African Soap Break off a bar-size piece from the bulk, then press it to shape with your hands, or use it as is. Rub the bar between your hands (or on a washcloth would also work), then rub your soapy hands on your skin and hair. (If you rub the bar on your hair, it will get hair stuck to the bar.) Black soap absorbs water easily, so keep it from sitting in water or it will dissolve away. The soap holders covered with little vertical fingers work well. Because this soap is softer than commercial soap, it comes off the bar more easily, so less rubbing of the bar is needed to release enough soap. When you start another bar, just push the old soap sliver onto the new piece and the two will easily unite; leaving no waste. How to Store the Black African Soap Pure traditional African black soap is a soft milled soap and has very high natural glycerin content. As a result, it readily absorbs moisture from the air. It must be stored in a dry location or in a sealed plastic bag or it will become soft as it absorbs moisture. Black soap exposed to the air will have a thin white colored film. This film is not mold it is caused by absorption of water from the air. This can be avoided by keeping the soap in a dry location away from moisture until ready for use.
