I've used a Schick razor 4 times in my life...each time I felt immediately afterwards like I had sprayed battery acid on my face. I know, thats a pretty harsh comment, but seriously, if you have ever suffered from a really nasty case of razor-burn, you know what I'm talking about. After the original Gillette Mach 3's came out, Schick quickly released the Quattro razor, which certainly LOOKED impressive when initially compared with the Mach 3. My brother-in-law let me borrow his, and excitedly I got ready to shave...unfortunately my face was once again chewed up. It hurt for 4 straight days. I had quite a growth happenin' by the time I shaved again using my VERY dull but trusty Mach 3--which did better on a set of blades I had used for 15 shaves compared to the Quattro's brand new set.
Needless to say I have stuck with Gillette ever since. Let me also point out that were it not for amazon Prime giving me a chance to try out the Hydro 5 for free, I honestly NEVER would've tried it. With that being said, let me be very clear here: the Hydro 5 has given me quite easily the closest and smooth/pain-free shave I think I have ever had. Recently I got to try the Bic Flex 4 disposable razor and considered it one of the best shaves I have ever had (pain-free, too), especially from a disposable...but the Hydro 5 is noticeably better...which isn't easy to pull off considering how much I really liked the Flex 4.
In one MAJOR leap forward, Schick has erased at least 15 years of serious dislike...oh, let me be entirely honest, outright hatred towards their products. I like the Hydro 5 enough that the next razor I purchase--and lets be open here: the prices are becoming a bit outrageous these days, but in order to get a good shave, what do ya do??--anyway, I plan on buying, from now on, the Schick Hydro 5. Out of nowhere they made a believer out of me. (took long enough, too)
***UPDATE***
I received my Schick Hydro 5 in early August, and here it is a day before October and I am STILL using the same original blade. Now I don't shave every day, preferring to do it every 3 days or so (shaving too often and my skin breaks out BAD) and while I STILL think Gillette makes great products, my Fusion Power razor would last about 5 maybe 6 shaves tops before I HAD to move to another blade or risk cutting off chunks of my jaw...So far my Hydro 5 razor has lasted me a little more than TWICE that number of shaves and is still shaving really, really close and lets not forget, comfortable as well. Wow.
I continue to be impressed. For the cost of razors these days, if you can squeeze out additional shaves with the same blades means less $$ out of pocket. Seeing as almost everywhere I go the Fusion blades run on average around $5 MORE for the SAME number of refills as what I routinely see the Hydro 5 cost (and the Gillette Proglide replacement blades are even more than that). I'm tellin' you, this is my new razor for the long haul from now on. More shaves, less money = one happy customer.
