Yes it cleans well, and yes it has a powerful smell. That said, I like these. I have been using them for about a year now. Let's consider when you might like them, too.
1. It cleans really well. It cleans from the water level in your bowl downwards. If your pipes deposit a bit of rust (or something) just under the rim of your toilet bowl, you'll need another cleaner or scrubber to get at that. These only clean where the water swirls around on its way down.
That said, if you keep a toilet brush in your bath, you can just dip that brush in the bowl and scrub away under the rim. The "scrubbing bubbles" soap is already mixed into your toilet water, so you don't have to spray around the rim. Just grab a brush and go at it.
2. It has a strong smell. Yes it does. After applying a bit to the toilet bowl, it smells quite strongly. The smell become less powerful after 24-48 hours. Not to be too icky, but my bathrooms have poor ventilation. I prefer the the smell of this product to what I might otherwise smell. I found I became acclimated to the smell after I'd used it several times. And there are different scents you can try, maybe you'll like one.
Drawbacks: Aside from the smell, which doesn't bother me at all now, it doesn't hold up well in hot weather. Here's the story: I live alone at the moment. I turn off the air conditioning when I leave the house in the morning. The house gets hot. When I get home, I turn the AC back on.
In the winter, a single application cleans a toilet for about a week. In the heat of the summer, a single application melts down into the toilet in about 2-3 days. So I use this product from October through May, and I use a bit of elbow grease the rest of the year.
