Customer Review: Be still my little green heart....
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
We live in an apartment with a dishwasher from the 70's. Yes, it's mustard yellow but the sucker still runs. I was wondering if these seventh generation pacs would even work in our dishwasher, and yes sireee! They do! They require a little squishing down, but worked like a charm.

I was previously using the Palmolive eco+ which I stupidly bought in all 3 scents before using it(lemon, lavender and apple). The lemon is washing our stuff ok, but the lavender one(or, at least it has a purple cap) left a gross white film in all our glassware. Not pretty at all. It was almost like giving your guests a dirty glass to drink out of even though it came fresh from the dishwasher. We haven't tried the green apple yet, though I will use all of them until they are gone. I had been really excited about the Palmolive eco+ because, well, it's green and cost efficient. It wasn't double the price of regular detergent like some other green products can be. I usually don't buy seventh generation products because honestly, I just couldn't afford it. I covet them to no end with my green little heart, but they are usually over my budget. Until these! They seem to be more in my price point and easy to use.

These seventh generation pacs are a refreshing change. The dishes are clean again! No more nasty white film, and they just overall looked CLEAN rather then "ohh...should we run that through again?". We've been blaming the poor dishwasher this whole time for being old.

Another difference I appreciate between the Palmolive and seventh generation -- seventh generation lists all ingredients so you can make the decisions if it's really all it's cracked up to be and still good for the environment. Palmolive promises it's phosphate free and better for lakes and streams, but don't provide their ingredients.

I'll definitely repurchase these! Running my dishes more then once with the other junk is clearly not saving me money, so a little splurge for something that works so well I will definitely budget for.

Customer Review: I was skeptical, but they work great!

Seventh Generation Automatic Dishwasher Detergent Concentrated Pacs (whew, that's a mouthful) are great! They contain no phosphates (which promotes algae growth), chlorine, dyes, or fragrances. They get my dished sparkling clean.

I had previously purchased Palmolive Eco, which is also phosphate free; to try an eco friendly dishwasher detergent, and it was awful. Food was left on dishes, my plastics started to get cloudy, and the flatware and dishes had a film on them. I actually thought my dishwasher was starting to go. I switched back to Cascade, trying the more effective Cascade Complete, and once again my dishwasher performed great. The clouding gradually went away on the plastics along with the film on my flatware and plates.

With that experience in mind I was a little hesitant to try Seventh Generation's dishwasher pacs, but since I've been using Seventh Generation's toilet bowl and surface cleaner for a while (which I highly recommend), I thought I'd give them a shot. I'm glad I did. They perform about 95% as well as the Cascade Complete. No food is left on dishes, plastics look great, and no more filming on plates and flatware. I find that by using the Seventh Generation pac in the main compartment and a little Cascade Complete in the prewash cup I get the best results. I don't prewash my dishes at all and there are plenty of foodstuffs on everything. Plus, I have very hard water in my area.

The only slight issue I have with them is that they are a little big for the wash cup and have to be smushed down a bit so I can close the door properly.

All in all... An awesome cleaning eco-friendly product.

P.S.: Instead of rinse agent I use white vinegar in my rinse aid dispenser as an eco friendly rinse aid, and that works great as well.

Customer Review: Good for the environment and surprisingly effective too!

I try to buy green whenever I can, but sometimes you just can't trade off clean & effective. I usually prefer less-is-more style of packaging and especially detest blister packs, individually wrapped candies and such because of the waste.

This product is a pleasant surprise in more ways than one:

* It is effective at getting the dried on food off my dishes.
* It is as effective as Cascade in my diswasher and better than the other green brands I have tried.
* No streaking.
* No filming
* No hardwater spotting.
* It is chlorine and phosphate free.
* The individual pouches are biodegradable.
* The box is 100% recycled paper (min 35% post consumer)
* All ingredients are listed.

While Clear & Free was not really a good quality in the laundry detergent (some inherent smells needed to be disguised), the clean and free smelled just clean and free. There weren't any wierd perfumes in the kitchen dulling the senses.

I also tested this product in a few neighbour's machines and it performed better in some machines than in others but it seemed to be the machine rather than the detergent. Just as with their usual detergent: the same pans with the same stuck-on food in the same areas of the machine. In one neighbour's machine, there was an apparent musty smell but we figured that out to be from the machine and some sitting dirty water or some fume-backup from the drain that wasn't disguised by this natural detergent.

After some online research, the cost of these pouches are comparable to Cascade pouches. Overall an excellent product and good for the environment too!

Customer Review: It's small, it doesn't smell like anything, and it works.

Short: It works, no residue or left-behind dirt, no scent in the air.

I've been slowly trying to replace my household cleaners with 7th-Gen products. I had switched the detergent I use for the dishwasher's pre-wash pocket to a natural one, but the main-wash is harder to get right (natural detergents typically break down too quickly at high temps), and after some bad episodes with an early Ecover product that left everything dirty, I was hesitant. But these "pacs" get it right.

I ran a couple of test loads: normal water, a mix of dirty dishes that have sat a few days and "fresh" ones, dishes arranged my usual way (tightly packed but correctly placed), my dishwasher heats water to the recommended temperature, and using the shortest wash cycle ("light/china").

I tried one load with, and one load without, a pre-wash detergent (the directions say to use just one pac in the "main" compartment, I was curious if I noticed any difference).

In both cases, everything came out clean! Just as clean as my usual combo of 7thGen gel (pre-wash) and Cascade Complete (main-wash). So one-pac-per-load from now on!

And here's the big plus: There's no lingering chemical scent in the air after use, and you're not flushing phosphates down the drain. That means no VOCs in the air to damage your lungs (my kitchen positively reeks after using Cascade Complete) and less chemicals to damage the local watershed.

All natural ingredients, recycled/recyclable/degradable packaging, good for you, good for the environment-- AND it works well! what's not to like? Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Clean Dishes, And I Feel Good About Being Green
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I'd always felt that the convenience of pre-measured dishwashing detergent packs were outweighed by the packaging and waste, and expense. Seventh Generation concentrated backs, however, are even greener than the detergent I'd been using.

But would they get my dishes clean?

I had a normal load, including one plate with some melted cheese scraps that I purposely left in as a test. I loaded the packet into the machine, closed the lid and started it up. A few hours later, I held my breath as I opened the door to see what I had. Would green be tough enough? Or would I find some funky film, or gross residue, or just not very clean silverware?

I am happy to report that my dishes had never been cleaner, ever. I love Seventh Generation and will definitely be buying it in the future unless the costs are too high. My dishes were sparkling, even the cheese plate. And the interior of the dishwasher itself was shining. Even the plastic storage containers that usually are soaking wet when they come out of the wash were dryer than usual. I was impressed.

The one weird thing was that your hands need to be dry when handling the packets; I assume because they dissolve so easily in the wash. For me, when I'm doing the dishes and starting the wash, my hands are usually soaked. This isn't a major problem and it didn't seem to affect the wash cycle, but be careful and try to keep the packs dry.
