Customer Reviews of Seventh Generation Natural Laundry Detergent with Non-Chlorine Bleach, Free & Clear, Powder, 112-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 4)Customer Review: does not get my clothes clean Summary: 3 Stars
I am really disappointed with this product. Surely, it is a godsend for those who do have chemical sensitivities, but our family chose Seventh Generation because we have a septic system and we don't want to potentially pollute the groundwater. It's a bonus that less pollution is created in the manufacturing process to make this detergent versus "regular" detergents.
Well, the part that bums me out is that it does not get the laundry clean. The clothes and towels looked dingy coming out of the washer and smelled unpleasant, but for awhile I chalked that up to the absence of fragrance and brightening agents. Then I started paying closer attention and convinced myself after carefully inspecting some shirts my husband had worn working out in the job that the detergent was not getting the soil out. In short, it doesn't work. It doesn't get the clothes clean.
I have tried using larger than the recommended quantity detergent per load and using high wash temperatures, and this does help, but then I figure, what good is that for the environment if I am now washing my laundry with hot water when I used to use cold? And what is the benefit of creating less pollution ounce per ounce when I am using twice as MUCH of the detergent now.
I find this to be true for all of the Seventh Generation laundry detergents I have tried: powder and liquid. I find that the type with the orange fragrance worked best for me, because at least it helped mask the B.O., but honestly, I dislike other no-fragrance detergents, including Tide, which at least gets the dirt out.
I still am using 7th Generation while looking for another alternative, but I am dissatisfied.
Customer Review: Great but if you have hard water you may want to reconsider! Summary: 3 Stars
I actually like this product ...it does get your clothes clean without all the nasty chemicals which is a bonus because we tried many all natural brands and trust me their is a ton of them out there that do not work!! BUT if you buy the powder and have hard water make darn sure you dissolve all of the detergent before putting your clothes in the washer or you will be very unhappy with the white "STAINS" on your clothes and NO it does no come out. We have 3 boxes of this detergent left and I am happy to take the time to dissolve it but we are going to start getting the Seventh generation liquid detergent to save a bit of time!

Customer Review: Great, but they just changed the formula Summary: 3 Stars
I'm now on my third case of this detergent from Amazon. When this case arrived I noticed it had a strong mildew smell to it. I called the company this morning about it and they said they've recently added an anti-sudsing ingredient that causes the mildewy smelly. Gross! Now the product is good for regular and high efficiency machines, but it comes with a stinky smell. Good news is the clothes don't end up smelling like it, but my laundry room does. I have four boxes to get through, but after that might have to start looking for another product.
Customer Review: Not for Front Load Washers Summary: 2 Stars
The title of this product sounds really good, but beware if you have a front loading washing machine. The major problem that I am experiencing is that the powder does not dissolve well and clumps together in the powder tray. The only way that i have found to get it completely out is to use a screwdriver and chisel it out. The directions on the box, which should be listed in the product description, say that you should fill the machine then dilute the product before adding clothes. This is just not doable with a front loading washing machine.
My second problem with the product is that it does not seem to get the clothes as clean as some of the other "free and clear" products on the market. So far my family has used half of one of the four boxes and I have already canceled my subscription for the product.
I was planning on trying the liquid form of the product, but many of the non-environmental related reviews seem to say that it does not clean well. Plus after this experience, it is time to try another brand.

Customer Review: Non-chlorine bleach also ages garments prematurely Summary: 2 Stars
In my experience, this product is quite harsh on the garments, fading the colors and weakening the fabrics, leading me to conclude that its bleaching action is too strong. Although the product does not contain the common chlorine type of bleach, it contains hydrogen peroxide as a bleaching, or oxidizing, agent. Hydrogen peroxide is what people use to bleach their hair on the cheap. If you use too much, your hair comes out. So you can imagine what repeated exposure will do to your clothes. I have found mainstream products that are not labeled as containing bleach less harsh on the clothes. It would make sense that the makers of Seventh Generation upped the bleaching action because of a need to compensate for a weaker detergent effect of the natural ingredients they are using. But if my clothes wear out twice as fast as they would if they were not exposed to the bleaching, or oxidizing, action, what is the global impact of that? I would try Seventh Generation again if they offered a non-bleaching laundry detergent.
