Customer Reviews of Shoprider EZ Chopper Personal Travel ScooterCustomer Review: A very cool product with significant limitations Summary: 4 Stars
Pro:
- It's by far the coolest looking mobility scooter I've seen.
- As such, it makes a great conversation piece (I guess that's a pro or a con, depending on the user.)
- Once we got the first (defective) battery pack replaced, it proceeded to be quite reliable.
- You can actually get it for considerably less than the Amazon price - just Google it.
- It's remarkably easy to put together (just make VERY sure you get the wheels on all the way), and not hard to break down for transport.
Con:
- From the product description: "the scooter drives effortlessly over speed bumps and obstacles". Well, no not really. The wheels have no shock absorption at all to them, so bumps are quite jarring. Extra padding on the seat helps. This cushion ObusForme by Homedics OFST-GEL The Gel Seat fits the seat perfectly and helps a lot.
- From the product description: "The front-wheel drive hub motor technology gives outstanding power and maneuverability with stable turns in tight areas." No, not so much. There's only so much power you can expect with one little drive wheel that doesn't have much weight over it. If the user has any body weight to speak of, this baby isn't going to do well on ramps or hills. Likewise, the functional stability of the scooter depends greatly on the weight of the user. We've had it tip over on a minimal cross-slope, with a rider who's well within the weight limit. This unit is very light for a scooter, which is nice for transport, but it cannot be as stable as a heavier scooter, especially a heavier scooter with four wheels.
- Limited cargo options: See the instability issue above - we tried putting this scooter backpack on here Caselogic PBS-1 ScooterPak fits 16-Inch to 18-Inch Scooters, Black and the tippi-ness got remarkably worse, even with nothing in the pack. It defies my mental model of the physics involved, but that's what happened. (Too bad, it's a great backpack!) The related armrest organizer Case Logic Mobility Armrest Organizer works great but doesn't hold much. And there's no clear way to mount a basket or bag lower to the ground as would be desirable. You can only pile stuff on the platform at your feet, and there's not room for too much. We've considered a cargo trailer made for a bike, but given the power limitations, it's probably not worth it.
- Ease of use: This really works more like a stand-up scooter than a high-end mobility scooter. As such, it takes more coordination to alternate between the throttle and the brake than to drive a "real" mobility scooter, where the brakes engage automatically when you back off the throttle.
Bottom Line: If you like the look of it and need it primarily for smooth, level surface mobility, this might be the scooter for you. If you need precision responsiveness, shock absorption, and the ability to handle a lot of bumps and slopes, this won't be your best choice. It sure is stylish, though, which can take some of the sting out of needing one of these things :-)
