Customer Reviews of SodaStream SodaMix - ColaCustomer Review: Q U I T E......W O N D E R F U L.....A N Y.........W A Y.......Y O U.......M A K E........I T ! Summary: 5 Stars
Realizing that soda, (with it's bubbling carbonation and phosphoric acid), is often caustic, (soaking in club soda, in fact, is a recommended method for cleaning rhinestone jewellery!), and can, if drunk often enough through the years, really do away with small parts of one's inner anatomy (!), I've reluctantly relegated soda -- once something I loved to drink SO much -- to a once-in-a-while treat.
(Sigh!)
But -- despite any shortcomings it may have -- I still do love the TASTE of cola flavouring, and will NOT give it up. Also, I often found that at times, when I drank commercially-produced soda, that there just didn't seem to be enough syrup in it for my own taste. (This NEVER happened at wedding receptions and parties, where, presumably, soda was mixed freshly in soda syphons.)
I'd been meaning, therefore, to try some cola syrup, by itself, on my own. No -- I do not own a soda syphon, or any soda-making equipment, for the reasons stated in the first paragraph. So recently, I decided to er....take the plunge!....and put my money where my mouth was....or my mouth where my thoughts were....or....well, anyway, to finally buy some cola syrup.
I decided to buy some SODA STREAM cola syrup, partly because its page on Amazon boasted that it had NO high-fructrose corn syrup. H.F.C.S. is a VERY bad ingredient, which -- believe it or not -- is actually higher on the Glycemic Index list than is sugar!!!!!) Wiithout the carbination, I like to think (imagine), that it is a special drink, served only at the lunch-room tables at Hogwart's School For Witches and Warlocks....and on the tables of homes who have bought this syrup, (without syphon), from SodaStream, Amazon, and a few other "Hogwarts approved" places. I guess I get this idea from the fact that the two-tiered bottle cap loooks for all the world like a snow-man's, (or elf's!) cap, and that the red and white lablled bottle, which has a shape resembling the human figure, (but without arms; or perhaps with arms clasped behind his back; and no legs -- or perhaps with legs not showing because his clothing is so long), reminds me a bit of a snoman, (or an elf!), too!
Sugar is the first ingredient here, and down the list of ingredients is Splenda, the sweetening used in even regular syrups by Soda Stream is listed as the safest of the artificial sweeteners by David Zinzenko in his "Eat This -- Not That" series. Splenda may not be the healthiest of ingredients -- but it certainly beats out aspartame!
Yes there IS some phosphoric acid in this product -- but not very much...
The "pseudo-soda" I make, without carbonating the water -- never tastes "flat" as sodas that have "lost their fizz" often do. I suppose this is because, without using a soda-syphon to carbonate the soda, the phosphoric acid, in my "pseudo-soda", has not been activated. At any rate, it makes a very nice, very cola-tasting drink. And I -- who usually add EXTRA Splenda to concentrated juice drinks, and other syrup-bolstered drinks, do NOT have to do so here. SodaStream syrup is sweet enough, just as it is, even for 10-Splenda-packets-in-my-16-ounce-coffee-mug me. (I am trying hard to cut down on the amount of Splenda I use, never fear....)
Shake, pour, stir, drink. The delicious flavour of this soda-stream cola makes a very refreshing and rewarding drink! (It tastes good with whatever kind of water you use....but, when using tap water, I find that BOILING the water first, then letting it cool down -- and/or using ice -- makes for better tasting pseudo-soda.) It does "wake" me up a bit....but drink too much and you'll probably get a bit nervous. Much sweeter than regular morning coffee, SodaStream Cola -- even without carbination but with icy cold / and/or even warm water -- tastes very, very good, as either a cold, or a hot drink!
