I was looking for a white noise machine since last summer when someone I know had one and let me use it in a hotel room. On that sound machine, I used the ocean surf and at times you could hear seagulls. I could actually hear the tape looping. Odd how the brain can detect the same seagull sound looping.
This sound machine also has ocean surf but there are no sea gull sounds AND you cannot hear the sounds looping. It really does sound like you are at the ocean. I don't use batteries. I just plug it in. The cord is plenty long enough to place it on a desk or table near a plug. The plug transformer is rather small, which is good when plugging in multiple things to an outlet. I just don't know why companies don't keep the transformer separate so just a plug is plugged in. I guess it is more expensive but all the laptops use a separate transformer. Anyway, I bought this unit because it had the option of adding a sound card. I don't think I'll buy one because there are 6 different sounds already. I don't need more.
One thing I would note is that the base that allows the machine to stand up snaps into the bottom. It is fine but I would recommend you remove it when packing your suitcase so it doesn't break off. This unit is designed so you can lie it down too so even if that broke, you would be fine.
You can quickly turn it on and off by pressing on the large gray panel on the front.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting a good white noise machine.

While researching sound machines to use for sleeping, I came across this product, and most of the reviews indicated it was a good "middle of the road" sound machine. Once I purchased it and the box arrived I thought "That's it? Where's the machine?" The box was much smaller than I anticipated. (I don't read shipping dimensions). I immediately set it up and listened to each one of the sounds for about 30 minutes each. They are very "real" sounding to me. You cannot hear the digital loop of the sound. My personal favorite is the ocean sound, although it did take a night or two to get used to it. I have noticed I get a better night of sleep while having this machine on. I no longer hear every single sound my house makes at night, or the sounds of my cats playing with random objects overnight. My sleep quality has improved greatly, as has my boyfriends. We are both VERY satisfied with this product and have already began recommending it to our friends and family with sleep troubles. We use it on "continuous" play, and turn it off in the morning. No problems with random "turn ons" as some of the other reviews have said, and we find the volume is good, and clear sound. We have not purchased any of the extra sound cards, and I'm not sure we ever will.
Going with this product for your sound machine choice is an excellent decision that you will not regret. It is worth the money to spend instead of going with a lower priced, lower rated product.

We have had no issues with the machine randomly turning on like others stated in their reviews. I went through with the purchase thinking if it doesn't work properly I will just return it, as Amazon's return policy is rock solid.
So far, about 4 weeks, we have enjoyed our evenings and naps with the machine. My wife loved using a fan to fall asleep and I hated the movement of air in the winters. We gave this a try and it's working out great for the both of us!!! The machine sounds good, surprisingly, and the options on sound loops are pretty solid. We have not felt the urge to order the other sound card as this is providing enough relaxing sound loops for us. We use the ocean waves, babbling brook, and rain mostly. We leave it on 90 minute intervals most of the time and the button is super easy to get to for turning it off and on in the dark. A cool feature is that it slowly fades out, decrescendos, the sound loop until nothing is heard so it does not wake you with an abrupt stop in play.
Buy it, it's a reasonable price and works great! I can honestly say I sleep better with it as well and $50 is small price to pay for better sleep. Much cheaper than our Select Comfort!! :)

First I want to say that I live in an apartment complex where my flat is right where the front is: so I have street noise, people coming/going with the cart's and stuff. I also have a CPAP machine. I have had this for about a week and I can say that I am sleeping like a baby. I also purchased the Sounds For Sleep card which has "Mechanical" Noises. I have used the White-Noise and the Fan and Airplane settings and with my CPAP machine I can't even hear if it is on. I have had no problems with the auto-turning on. I believe people might be pushing the big-grey button that is off/resume. I also haven't had the transient sounds as of yet but I read in the manual that if you turn it off with the dial you have to wait at least 15 seconds before turning it back on again.
My only con is: if there was a package to hold the extra sound cards(which actually are easy to put in: the label goes in the front and once it is in a little, just a little push("Just Tap it in"-Chubbs to Happy Gilmore") and it goes in. To activate the sound card just push the button next to the card after turning it on.

Absolutely love this "sound therapy" machine. I've been able to cut back dramatically on my ambien use since I started using it. While the white noise option is great, I particularly love having the ocean option---something about the ebb & flow of the waves is very soothing and definitely helps me sleep. Sounds like the wind storm aren't options for me because they scare the cats, but white noise and ocean don't seem to bother them. It was slightly difficult to get the stand onto the bottom at first, but it stays on just fine, and there's also the option of hanging this on the wall. Love the small size---fits easily into a small bedroom area. Also love the lack of any lights to disturb my sleep. Haven't tried the option to use additional sound cards (and don't plan to), which other reviewers have had some trouble with, so I can't judge that feature. The six included sounds are plenty for me.
