First thing to know is that I am not big on alternative medicine. Diet, exercise, massages - yes. The rest? Mostly skeptical, though I wouldn't mind getting into meditation just for meditation's sake. Biofeedback is also something I could relate to, having used digital monitors to slow down my heart rate for fun. Only mentioning this to explain where _I_ am coming from, not as a criticism of alternative medicine.
Second is that I often have problems getting to sleep. I tried sleeping pills for a short time and felt even more muzzy the next day so I've mostly just resigned myself to occasional sleepless nights for the last 15 yrs or so (1-2 times a week). I don't think I am overly stressed nowadays and there is nothing in my life that really needs fixing - I just have lousy sleeping habits and can't fall asleep because my mind can't relax at bedtime.
Stress relief is not something I care about. And if I was aiming to meditate, I would do it the "proper" way i.e. I have no opinion on this device's relevance to meditate.
Bottom line on why I bought it: this gadget is pretty pricey, but I figured it would be worth if it improved my sleep because that has been such a problem.
For me it has worked very well. Somehow, slowing down and modifying my breathing to maximize my "score rate" according to its feedback screen makes me doze off. Too well sometimes - I start closing my eyes without really hitting a good relaxation state. I find keeping my eyes open to adjust my breathing by looking at the wave shapes is what works best for me. Most of the time (90%), I can use it for about 5 minutes, get 25 "points", and fall asleep within 10 minutes afterward.
The one thing it has not been so helpful with is that I wake too early as well. It is difficult, when you are half awake and trying to get back to sleep, to have the discipline to turn the lights on to fiddle with this thing. I do it occasionally but it only works about 50% of the time and requires at least a 20 minute use from me. Reading a bit, then using it works better. But all that time adds up when it is 5:30 and you have to get up at 7:00.
Still the improvement in how well I fall asleep has been worth the $175 I paid for it. I've read some books about insomnia and realize that there are many different types of sleep disorders so it may not be for everyone. But it sure works for me. Many negative reviews concern malfunctions - I think the manufacturer should fix their quality control issues because it really is a fantastic device when it works. And it is CHEAP compared to any therapy you have to pay for.
p.s. I had tried "unassisted" breathing techniques before, without any success. Ditto exercise. And it works fine with rechargeable batteries, if you care about that.
