I have been using the Tanita 1631 Scale for the past 2 years to first lower and then maintain my weight. I can endorse it wholeheartedly.
Rather than relying on batteries, this scale utilizes light for its power source. Ambient light falls on the photoelectric cell (that's it just below the digital readout in the picture), is converted to electricity, and the scale comes to life. I have a small bathroom, so I keep mine in the closet between uses. When I remove it from the darkness and place it on the floor of the bathroom (illuminated by a 60-watt fixture overhead), it takes about 20 seconds for the display to respond with a "Lo" and another 20 seconds to display the "00" that indicates that the scale is ready. This short delay is the price for never having to replace or recharge batteries. And I'm sure that if I left the scale out all the time instead of storing it between uses in total darkness, the 40-second delay would be greatly reduced or eliminated.
The scale reads to the nearest half pound. If you reweigh yourself several times in quick succession, you get the same weight each time - a reassurance of accuracy.
The display is clear and easy to read when standing on the scale. The digits are about an inch high. When you first stand on the scale, the numbers jump around for 2 or 3 seconds, but quickly settle and then blink to indicate that weighing is complete. There is a large button on the front edge that you can kick with your toe to re-zero the scale if you want.
No matter which diet you follow, losing weight will always be difficult. But, at least using the Tanita is easy.
