Customer Review: Nice looking but useless when it stops working

This is a very nice looking unit and worked well for close to a year. I stepped on one day and got nothing so I bought 2 new batteries (CR2032). From then on all I can get are very low readings such as 8.6 lbs. I followed the unit directions stating to step on, then off, then back on to reset the unit any time the unit has been moved. I then thought maybe it had changed to kg, even though that would still be too low. It has a button on the back to switch, that wasn't it. Searching the internet I see I am not alone.

I tried the take batteries out, stand on for 7 seconds, reinstall batteries method described in the link. This actually did result in one improvement! Instead of 8.6 lbs I now get 1x8.6 lbs. The 1st digit has now appeared but the 2nd digit is completely blank. So possibly the calibration issue is fixed, but now there is an LCD display issue with the 2nd digit. aargh!
Taylor has a lifetime warranty...if you want to find or buy a box for it, pack it up, go to the post office line and pay to ship it to New Mexico. For the price-point of buying a new, DIFFERENT brand (trying Heath Meter this time), its not worth the hassle for me. I am very disappointed b/c I did really like the styling and very low profile. It allowed the toilet door to swing over the unit so it could be placed in the toilet room.
EDIT: Well, I guess all it took is to take the time to post a review of this product to get it to work! Here is what I did (per instructions found on the web). Take batteries out, stand on scale for 7 seconds, get off, put batteries back in, step back on and if display shows anything step right back off, then step back on to weigh myself. As I mentioned above this seemed to work except that the 2nd digit was now blank. I kept walking by over the next hour or so and stepping on it. Amazingly at some point the middle digit magically reappeared! I don't know what happened. I changed the battery in this thing months ago and have had bad too low readouts ever since. I only tried the 7 sec method the day I wrote this review. The frustration is what drove me to write the review. Bottom line...crazy as it sounds it is worth a try...the scale is still working fine 9 days later.
