This product arrives in packaging with a manual and an instructional CD-ROM. I would advise the company to forget the expense of the CD-ROM and just stick with the manual. A simple flash video on their website could illustrate use of the device.
Essentially one takes temperature by holding down a button and bringing the thermometer towards the surface to read. When the two projected red dots converge, the button is released and an infrared reading is obtained and stored in memory as well.
The converged dot ends up being only about 1.5 cm in diameter at the correct reading distance - under an inch and it is not hard to find an area to read. The correct reading distance is about 2 inches away.
The manual recommends the central forehead, but I have gotten temperatures matching true core temp a little better by measuring a little to the side in the temporal area, possibly due to better temporal artery perfusion.
Note that alternate reading sites are recommended for those with heavy sweat on the forehead or makeup. Also, immediately after heavy physical activity, readings may be less reliable.
The genius of a noncontact thermometer is that there is no part that contacts a sick child or patient, and thus reduced risk of spread via the thermometer. Also, there are no little plastic covers to have to re-buy (and hope that they still make them), unlike the ear thermometers and many of the digital oral thermometers. Finally, no contact means that it can be performed on sleeping children and the degree of cooperation necessary is less.
A great product for cold and flu season. It replaces an ear thermometer for us that was not always fun to use in fussy children and we always regretted waking them at night to use the ear thermometer. Moderately expensive, but as a home-use consumer (and as a physician) I recommend this.

I've historically been an Exergen thermometer fan. One of those that you swipe across the forehead. See, I have a son who is a brain cancer survivor, so I'm used to taking someone's temperature frequently throughout a long duration hospital stay.
As an investor in the company that makes this thermometer (symbol: ASFX) I figured I'd give it a try to support the company.
To my surprise, this thermometer is not only easy to use, but my children love it, and it's very accurate. Reading the instructions or watching the video equally show you how to use it, the key thing is to use it exactly as the instructions say. Make sure you push the button once to get it 'ready' and then hold it while you line up the dots. If you don't that right, the accuracy will be questionable.
One of the things that's different with this thermometer that takes some getting used to is that with it taking the 'external' temperature as quickly as it does it's range of 'normal temperature' is slightly different. The documentation calls out these ranges, so you just have to get used to the normal ranges.
I am confident that it gets the temperatures accurate, especially for high fevers and I have personally used it to read temperatures up to 105. It's great and worth the money for yourself or a gift.

This product was recommended to me by a friend that is a nurse. IT WORKS GREAT!! Maybe the person that wrote the negative review has a defective one (because I have never had any problems). It's very accurate. One night I had my 6 month old in the ER with a fever and the nurse looked at me like I was an idiot when I showed her this thermometer. She proceeded to tell me that the most accurate way to check a baby's temperature is rectally (which used to be the only way that I would check my kids' temperatures when they were babies). Well, my thermofocus and her rectal thermometer gave the same reading!!!! She admitted that she had been very skeptical and that she wouldn't have believed me if she hadn't seen it for herself (which I don't blame her because I felt the same way before testing it out for myself).
The ABSOLUTE best thing about this thermometer is that you can check the temperature of your baby when they're sleeping. Seriously, HOW GREAT IS THAT????
Also, in my experience, the ear thermometer and the one that you scan across the forehead are WORTHLESS---they always give very different readings.

I have the original model and this one. I am a school nurse and am using both of these in my office and just love the ease and quick accurate readings I get using them. The instructions say to use it on the forhead and that the forehead needs to be dry or it will reflect the laser light. In darkness you just hold down the laser light button until it is one circle on the forehead (dry) and let go and get the temp. Use the memory button to get your reading once you are in a lit room. It reads low when kids have not eaten breakfast or have drank something cold. It can be used on the carotid artery in the neck area also. I have a backup B&D digital mouth thermometer to get a second reading if I have any questions. This might be needed once or twice a day max. Love this as there is no spit to be touching and my severe disable kids are not bothered with it. I have used this for 6 hours a day for the last 10 months and all I had to do was change the battery. Got this just in time for our daughters first bad fever. Certainly need to read the instructions, store it in the room you are most likely to be using it and then you will be really happy with it. I couldn't have imagined having to disrupt her every time we wanted to know how she was doing! We still used a rectal thermometer at changing times, and used readings of our own temperatures as a test. If you don't like technology or reading instructions, you might not like this thermometer. I found that if you follow the directions and can trouble shoot the reason behind an occasional errant reading you will learn to love this thermometer when you really need it!
