This product is ok and I think it works (how do you know unless you have another thermometer), but it is a little high maintenance. Hopefully you don't have 2 kids in seperate rooms sick because you have to let it aclimate to the room the child is in for 30 minutes before using it.Customer Review: Accuracy questionable

This device doesn't seem to take accurate measurements. Even following the directions exactally, I can take baby's temp multiple times and each time a different temp comes up. Works great as a room air temp gauge.Customer Review: good luck opening battery compartment

I just took this out of the box.
At least on my unit, the battery compartment cover could not be opened by hand alone. I had to get a small screwdriver to pry it off. The "push" the button method wouldn't release it.
Once the battery cover was off and the supplied batteries were installed, the unit was up and working.
Now I am left to wonder if the thing is accurate. I checked my mother in law's forehead and it read 96.9. That seems too low. I will run tests on the unit over the next several days. If I don't feel it is telling me the accurate temperature, the thing will either go in the garbage or back to the store for a refund.

I purchased this because of the great reviews it received. It is absolutely inaccurate. I took it with me to the doctor's office, after I compared it repeatedly with my Exergen Temporal. The Exergen would tell me my temperature was 99.2 (repeatedly) while this one told me 97.2. I read and followed the instructions to the letter and everything I tried told me a different temp than what it was. At the doctor's office, same thing - with the doctor's thermometer, and my exergen temporal, my child's fever was 100.2, with this one, 99.1. Worthless, especially since this cannot be returned.
In addition to this, have you ever tried to take the temp of a squirming child? I had to hold my child's head so the darn thing would show me the one point of light, then, still hold him so it would show me the temp. Not good for children unless they can stand still, follow directions and not move.
The one star is for the product, not the fact that I cannot return it.

Okay, first off it's a little too sensitive to the exact distance, position, etc. When i'm triaging in hospital i'm trying to get vital signs with both hands, or typing with one etc... an oral or tympanic is just a one touch of a button and I can't really see a frightened 2 year old holding still for a few seconds while I get the little red lights zero'd exactly on a spot on their head.
Then... the big beef. I tried to use it at my cabin, and it won't work because the room is too cold! From the instructions there is a limitation to the ambient temperature. Too hot or cold and it won't read.
Well that makes it about useless for field use.
This product needs to be one touch fast, work from 5 inches to 5 feet, work in freezing temps (didn't work at 50' F.) and desert sunlight and on wet, sweaty skin (which it won't) otherwise it's a waste of time.
Returned mine.
