Customer Reviews of Time Timer, 8 Inch

Customer Review: Love it.
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this timer. It is one of my favorite tools for all children, special needs or not, for the classroom or at home. I even use the small one for myself--to help me get out the door on time in the morning. If you let a child fiddle with it, yes, it will malfunction or break. BUT, if you let a child fiddle with it, the time you allot suddenly becomes negotiable, and you've negated the benefit of this tool, anyway. I'm very clear from the get-go (words and gestures): "This is for you to look at with your eyes, and for me to touch with my hands. You use your eyes; I use my hands." Then, if needed, I put it out of reach. The chime at end (which can be turned off) is very soft, which is perfect for children with aversions to jarring sounds. The older version doesn't have a chime. Maybe the next version will have a couple of volume settings for the chime, for those who would like to hear it in noisy settings?

Customer Review: Many Uses
Summary: 5 Stars

We use this timer all day, every day for my two little ones. It is an awesome visual for the passing of time. No more of me just yelling out random times, "We're leaving in five minutes!" - I just set the time and the kids can see how much time they have left to watch tv, brush teeth, eat breakfast, get ready, have in time-out, etc., etc., etc. The cons are that it isn't very sturdy, and the "beep" is quiet. It is definitely not something the kids can toss around, but my 4 year old can set it herself and place gently on a shelf or tabletop. We tried the small size (way too small for visualizing less than 5 minutes) and the large (wasn't reliable, and even less sturdy). This 8-inch model is perfect for home use with little ones. My daughter relies on it so much that she requested her own Time Timer from Santa last Christmas!

Customer Review: Not a toy, but a tool....
Summary: 5 Stars

and this timer should be treated as such. Our PDD-NOS/ADHD 11 yr old son does not notice the passage of time, so chores and homework do get timed in my home. We are buying one of these for his teacher to use in the classroom as it's easy to use, the visual representation of time elapsed is great, and is a great tool overall to use with kids (and adults) who have a problem staying on task. Many of the reviews mentioned that this timer breaks easily; that can be a problem as the timer is open faced so the time can be set by moving the plastic dial, and the battery is readily accessible for small hands through the back. I would not allow a small child with a tendency to take things apart or put in his/er mouth to "play" with this timer.

Customer Review: Great visual timer for time challenged kids
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like this timer. It is very easy to use and see from across the room. My 9yr. old son has ADHD, heavy on the hyper. Time means absolutely nothing to him. But now, with this timer, it gives him a visual to use to gauge the time he is given to accomplish certain tasks.

It has taken a lot of stress off of me, because he is willing to use it. Lately, I am noticing that he doesn't like me reminding him. (you would think I would have stopped by now. Bad habits are hard to break) The other day, I started to remind him about something that needed to be done before school and he said, "I know the drill, mom."

I need to get used to the idea that he is getting the hang of this time thing!

Customer Review: So useful for mealtime & timeout!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this to use with my mildly autistic son who has been a dawdler at mealtime. It has been a great success. He gets to set the timer to the time I specify for the meal, and then he can gauge how much time he has. It's not very sturdy, but it's stood up to a couple of drops and him pulling the timer a little too far out.
One thing I am grateful for that the product specs don't mention is that you have the choice of having the timer be audible or not. I agree with other reviewers that the two little beeps can be lost in the din, so it's good to be near / attentive.
I would highly recommend using this visual timer to help structure any child's day!
