I wonder if the other reviewer even owed one of these rechargers. I have owned and used one for 6 months and I am buying another. Yes, some cells leak on recharging. As other writers have mentioned, the batteries that leaked were Rayovacs. I also had new, never regenerated, Rayovacs leak in my equipment so I don't use them anymore. I have had no trouble with others so far. I also drastically cut down on my battery bill.
Originally, I did measure the battery voltage before and after regenerating. I have had batteries as low as 0.81 volts regenerate to 1.6 volts. Yes, that is higher than the 1.5 volts they measure when they are new but that is what my voltmeters read, They work fine. I use them in LED flashlights, portable CD players, and my grandson regenerates the same battery for his cheap MP3 player. He has been using the same battery for over a month. I have one set of three in an LED flashlight that I left on for a week. I regenerated them and they are back in the flashlight and still working after several weeks. NOTE: LED flashlights will not drain the batteries to zero as an standard bulb will. A standard flashlight bulb might kill the batteries. I don't know. I don't use standard bulbs any more.
Actually, any application that takes the battery voltage to almost zero such as an R/C car, a toy, or a standard flashlight bulb, may kill a battery permanently. My electronics and LED lights all shut down before the battery is fully drained so the batteries have a better chance of recovering.
If you are concerned about Alkaline battery leakage (read the Wikipedia entry on them to see what it looks like), cut a small piece of plastic wrap and line the regenerator chamber leaving just the contacts exposed. If a battery leaks, you can contain it and throw it out before it damages your unit.
Considering that the reviewer's first "Fact Check" was wrong, and that my experiences have been completely different than the reviewer's opinions, you might want to be skeptical.
Remember, a completely depleted (0.8 volts or less) battery may take 3 days to regenerate but my grandson has found that he can "top" his off overnight if it has had light use. Also, batteries, even new ones, can leak, it is wise to take precautions.
