Customer Review: Working great for my 4.5 year old son

After reading other reviews, I decided to go with this instead of the pricier one. I'm really glad I did. First off, my 4.5 year old son was daytime potty trained at 2.5 years old but has *never* been dry at night, not even for naps. He's a very deep sleeper, we were never able to wake him enough to get him up to pee in the past. To prepare, I bought "7 Steps to Nighttime Dryness" which I definitely recommend reading. I talked it over with my son and told him we could buy him an alarm that would help to teach him to wake up to pee on his own. He was tired of waking up wet, even with Goodnights or Underjams pullups, he was peeing so much his pj's were usually wet every morning. He was excited to try it, so we bought it.
First of all, you need to understand that the alarm is not necessarily to wake your kid up at first, it's to alert YOU as the parent to when your child is peeing so you can help them get up. I see that some reviewers think it's not loud enough; I could hear it from the adjacent room while watching a movie, so it was plenty loud for us. I set up the baby monitor in his room so I wouldn't miss it. However, each time the alarm went off, it woke him up enough to get him out of bed or at least up before I got to his room. To make clean-up easier, I clipped the alarm to his underwear then put the night-time pullup over the underwear. The cord is quite long, but after threading it up through his pj shirt, I looped it a couple of times and tucked it under the alarm before attaching it to the shirt with the magnet.
After just 1.5 weeks of use, my son has had 2 dry nights in a row!!! I anticipated it taking much longer, and I'm delighted to have some results so quickly. We had 2 dry naps, and then a few days later, dry at night. Even before this, the amount he was wetting before stopping his urine flow had greatly reduced; sometimes it was just a spot enough to start the alarm. 3 nights ago, he wet a few hours after going to bed, then 2 hours after that I heard him wake up & move around. I went into his room and found him awake but confused... I realized he'd probably woken up with the need to pee but didn't quite know what to do. He didn't want to get up, so I let him go back to bed, but 2 minutes later he got up to pee on his own. Big progress! And then the following 2 nights he was dry! We are definitely on the road to dryness.
The things I really like about the alarm: it takes 2 AAA batteries. Follow the instructions on inserting them, it was a bit odd to me but it only works when you put them in the way they say. I really like the magnetic clip to attach the alarm to the shirt, it makes it so that my son can put it on himself as well as not having to worry about him ripping out a safety-pinned alarm in his sleep. However, there is a hole to use a safety pin if you care to. The alarm sound changes each time it alerts, there are 5 different sound patterns, so it keeps the kids from getting accustomed to the same sound. You can't beat the price, and it is a very good quality product. Granted, we've only used it for a week and a half, but it seems like a well-constructed product, and has worked quite well for us. The noise isn't excessively loud, but then the alarm is right by their ear if you position it correctly, so you don't want them to go deaf! You can turn the function to vibrate, alarm, or combo (I used combo).
One last word of encouragement to other parents: for a few nights, I was thinking maybe he wasn't ready because he was SOOO grumpy and whiney when he woke up from the alarm. However, he really wanted to keep doing the alarm so I went with it. Then at times *he* didn't want to use the alarm, but I reminded him it was helping him learn to be dry. In the middle of the night when you are both tired & disoriented it's sometimes hard to remember the point of all this madness, but stick with it, and with persistence, consistency & time it will work. I'm convinced from my research that this is the only way to train your kids to get up on their own to pee, and it's such a huge gift to give them.
I'm beyond pleased that things are working so well, and I definitely would recommend this to parents with a bedwetter.
