Customer Reviews of Zeo Personal Sleep ManagerCustomer Review: Get to know your sleep patterns Summary: 5 Stars
I asked for the Zeo as a present because I have trouble getting enough sleep when I am stressed and I thought that it would be nice to look into more detail at what goes on when I am asleep to try and get around it.
The package consists of a bedside alarm clock, a headband, and online support. I wanted to wait until I am back at work before I try the 6 months of sleep coaching because that is when I have the most problems sleeping. I may come back and add some information later when I have a chance to try this out. I have been using the alarm clock and headband for about a week and a half now.
The alarm clock is very easy to use and has all the features you would expect from an upper-end alarm clock. It is fairly compact and light yet robust. It keeps track of the time so that makes it very easy to take with you on a business trip or on vacation - just plug it in. The plug also says that it works with 100 and 240 volts, as well as 50 and 60 hertz so it should work in different countries. There are five ringtones that run the gamut from soothing to abbrasive, and they increase in volume. There is a snooze button for which you can set your preferred time interval. The brightness level of the display can be adjusted very easily - I normally don't like having to fiddle with things like brightness levels but I have no problem turning the display right down in the evening, then turning it on in the morning when I want to look at the time. There are little bumps on the button to turn the alarm off and the snooze button so you can tell them apart, which is necessary particularly if you have a dark bedroom, poor eyesight and are kind of out of it when you wake up.
The alarm clock also has a function that searches for a good time to wake you within a certain time period, which seems to work well.
The headband is very comfortable and I haven't had any problems with it staying on. There were a couple of faint marks on my head when I had the band on tighter that disappeared when I washed my face and put on moisturizer. The sensors need to be replaced sometimes. My kit came with three extra headband sensors, and each one lasts about three months, so I'm good for one year. Replacements are about $13 per piece.
The alarm clock saves up to one week of data, and it is saved onto an SD card that comes with the package. Recording the sleep data and uploading it is very intuitive. You put on the band when you are ready to go to sleep and the alarm clock finds the headband and shows that it is recording data after only a minute. When you wake up, you just put the headband back in its cradle, the clock asks you how well you think you slept, then you can have a look at the data directly. It lets you scroll through the ZQ (a calculation based on the total time asleep, amount of REM, light and deep sleep, number of times woken and time that you were awake), then the data used for the ZQ in detail, as well as the time taken to fall asleep, and there is a sleep graph you can scroll through. This is mainly useful for pointing out that you were woken and remained awake for 25 minutes after your spouse went to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Uploading the data is simple. You need to create a profile on myzeo.com including the serial number of your alarm clock first. They have a basic package that lets you look at the data in more detail than shown by the alarm clock. The data is handled via the website and there is no software to install. For the data upload I take the SD card out of the zeo and stick it into the SD card reader in my laptop. They also provide a USB adaptor if you don't have an SD reader already. Then I just navigate to the file on the SD card and the software knows which days need to be uploaded. I am not sure whether all the data is backed up on the SD card and the software knows what days are already there or data is erased after it is uploaded, but it keeps track of what has already been uploaded. You can also decide not to upload data from particular days if someone else has tried it out and you don't want their night's data under your profile. I also have a heart rate meter that I use when jogging and the zeo is much easier to use in terms of uploading data. There is also an online sleep journal that you use to fill in your activities before sleeping, alcohol and caffeine consumption, etc with the possibility to add some custom sleep factors (although they have some very generic names for these, e.g. Environment 1). There is a simple "cause and effect" graph that lets you plot variables about your sleep (time in REM, times woken, etc) against items from the journal or recorded from the headband (sleepiness, bedtime, alcohol consumption, etc).
At the moment, I am finding it interesting to see my sleep cycles and learning about what is going on in my brain after I close my eyes. It's also a good way to record how well I am sleeping. I think it will be easier to focus on why I don't sleep well now that I am quantitatively recording so much sleep information, and it's great that the software allows sleep quality to be analyzed in so many different ways.
