Customer Reviews of gDiapers Biodegradable Diapers Refills, Medium/Large, 32 Count Bags (Pack of 4)Customer Review: Love the inserts, hate the Little g pants Summary: 5 Stars
We spend a lot of time at a mountain cabin with no trash pickup, so flushable, environmentally friendly diapers were, I thought, the greatest invention of all time. And they really are! BUT. I have always had problems with the little g pants. I joined the Yahoo group and we use various different cloth diapers and I'm very used to a bunch of different things that go on a baby's bottom, and g pants were the worst. I didn't mind that the poop got on the liner but after a few handwashings, the elastic was totally shot (they even say not to handwash very often, but we have no machine up at the cabin). After a while, the vinyl felt almost dewey when wet. It definitely lost its waterproof properties over time, and the covers aren't waterproof so we did get dampness and then leaks. My husband tightened the g pants too tight around the waist which according to g experts breaks the seal and caused leakage, plus they were difficult under clothes. I just don't like diapers that have a "learning curve." Because of this, I more or less gave up on gDiapers despite the fact that I LOVE that they're flushable/compostable/biodegradable.
Yes, I know this isn't a product review of the little g pants--stay with me here :). After complaining about the little g pants, someone suggested I simply use the insert in a different diaper cover. And let me tell you, my prayers were answered! Because we already use cloth diapers, I have a variety of different covers onhand, and I've tried at least a dozen others. I found that a large number of PUL covers easily accomdate this g insert. Simply lay the insert flat into the cover and fasten. I personally highly recommend Thirsties covers (available on Amazon) as they are a single layer of waterproof PUL, wipe-clean, and have a flap in front to help hold the insert into place, but many other covers are equally as effective. Best of all, they require no learning curve and you can fasten them as tightly and securely as you want with no worry about creating a leak problem. And because the cover is waterproof (unlike little g pants) if urine escapes the insert, it won't escape the cover--something I could never be 100% sure of with the little g pants. As far as poop goes, I have had poop escape the insert and have had to wash the cover. However, it doesn't always happen (with the little g pants it happened every time) and my covers are much easier to wash and I don't ruin the elastic.
I know it still sounds like I'm reviewing the pants, but here's the bottom line, I LOVE LOVE LOVE these gDiaper disposable inserts. LOVE THEM! Five stars all the way around! Put them in the right cover and they're easy to use, flushable (I don't have a problem, though be careful if you have very old plumbing), and even if you do throw them away, they are much less bulky in the trash than disposables and fill up the pail a whole lot slower. A single insert has never worked for me overnight, but you can take an extra insert and fold it into thirds, then position it under a regular insert right where your baby pees and that has lasted overnight with my power wetter with no problem. Bottom line, I'm not a fan of the little g pants, but I LOVE this insert. If gDiapers aren't working for you--don't give up!!! Try them in a different cover first.
Regarding cost, they used to be prohibitively expensive, but they are now available through subscribe and save, and if you join Amazon Mom that's an additional 15% off. Breaking it down, Subscribe and Save plus Amazon Mom brings these down to 28 cents each. That's less than I pay for Huggies when I buy them at the store (our size 5 Huggies on Amazon come out to 23 cents each, so only 5 cents more for the g inserts). And in fact, they're only 2 cents per diaper more expensive than Seventh Generation, and Seventh Generation aren't biodegrable.
I truly recommend these gDiaper refills. If you're looking for an environmentally friendly, compostable, biodegradable, flushable, easy, and convenient disposable, these gDiaper refills are fantastic. I personally found that my leakage problems were due to the little g pants. Pair these refills with the right cover and they really are awesome.
