I have yet to buy this product, but I've used it extensively in Brookstone stores. I quite want one- it's actually the best foot massager I've ever tried out. I just wanted to provide a counterpoint to all the very negative (painful) reviews it has.
It is intense. It is strong. It will hurt if you don't slide your feet in as far as they can absolutely go (and maybe a little farther). If you try to take your feet out, it will hurt more because you'll be moving them into an improper position in which the rollers that are meant to be pressed into your sole will hit the balls of your feet. That's likely what most of the reviewers experiencing pain felt. If it hits the balls of your feet, it definitely hurts.
I know how far my feet need to go in though, and perhaps I just have the appropriate foot size (although I'm pretty standard - 9 1/2 men's), but I absolutely love this thing- on every setting, every intensity.
It's more deep pressure than soothing, and I recommend you try it out at Brookstone first -as you should with any massager like this- before you buy it online.
I took a friend of mine into the store and got her to use it and she loved it as well, but she had me coaching her to have her feet absolutely all the way in (she has much smaller feet than I).
I don't mean to say the negative reviews aren't valid- only to say it isn't objectively terrible and there are some people that really like it.
